Director, web development, Orbital
Job description: Primarily, I am a designer and developer. As a small company, we all wear different hats.
Is this the job you thought you’d be doing? I started out as a computer technician, but after helping my boss with some code for the company website, she decided I was better at that than I ever was as a computer technician. I am happy for that slight nudge because I don’t think I would have been as happy as I am now.
Advice to others on launching a career: You’ll be successful if you’re passionate about your work and love what you do. The predisposed hardship associated with starting a business is bunk. Keep your head up and self-reflect everyday.
Roots: Born in Hamilton, but my family moved around a lot when I was younger. I always felt at home in Hamilton, so that comfort always drove me back.

Best feature of life in Hamilton: People. Despite being an introvert, I’m always welcomed by our great community.
What would make Hamilton a better city? Hamilton has improved over the last few years due to organic growth and people taking ownership of their neighbourhoods and communities. It’s important that we don’t let special interests groups take hold of what we’ve built on our own. We have so much to be proud of.

Quote: We see great tech talent heading out of Hamilton, but I fear these people fail to understand what they are leaving behind. You have a rare chance at being the underdog in Hamilton and being part of the groundswell, a joy you’re unlikely to experience in bigger cities like Toronto.
